Getting Involved

As a Citizen, you can contact the Buchanan County Litter Control and Recycling Office to find out about current cleanup and recycling events. A service the litter office provides is the large appliance pickup.  This service is available to any Buchanan County citizen during special events.  If citizens need abandoned vehicles removed from their property, the litter office has a program-Abandoned Car Roundup.  All of the programs are free to  Buchanan County residents.  For more information, please contact  Mr. Jerry Ward, BCLC&R office at 276-935-4574.

Conduct a Neighborhood Cleanup
To assist citizens groups with community cleanups, the Buchanan County Litter Control and Recycling office will provide groups with bags, gloves, vests, cleanup ahead signage and staff assistance.  One new program that citizens can become involved is the Adopt-A-Dump. Interested citizens can also adopt a section of highway through the Virginia Department of Highways Adopt-A-Highway program.  This program requires groups to clean up their section 4 times per year.  Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation offers citizens the Adopt-A-Stream program.  This program requires a group to cleanup 2 times per year.

If any group or organization would like a presentation on our programs please contact the litter control and recycling department to schedule.

Participate in the Spring Cleanup
Each year Buchanan County Litter Control and Recycling Office provides citizen groups with an innovative litter cleanup event, better known as the $1 per bag program.  This program pays citizens groups $1 per bag and in most cases, this provides the county with an inexpensive method for cleaning up illegal dumps.

Cleanup an Illegal Dump
Over the past 2 years, the Buchanan County Litter Control Office has identified over 150 illegal dumps.  Each ranging in size from small to large dump sites.  Small dumps can be cleaned by a local group or neighborhood organization.  In some cases, the litter control office can provide equipment to assist with a clean up effort.  Most people say “well I didn’t put that stuff there, why should I clean it up”. The fact is, that it hurts your property values, county tourism and even economic development.  To you that may be a job!  Industries don’t want to locate in areas where the “citizens” don’t take pride in where they live!  The last reason to rid the hillside of illegal dumps is simply to beautify our “HOME”!  In 2006-07, the Buchanan County Litter Control and Recycling office has cleaned 47 of the identified illegal dumps, removing 400+ tons of potentially harmful materials.

What Buchanan County Businesses can do
To promote recycling in the office place, the Buchanan County Litter Control and Recycling Office has been working with a national company to promote office paper shredding/recycling. Through the litter and recycling office, Shred-It, Inc. offers a annual event that businesses can shred outdated documents in a secure manner.  One of the largest materials found in the Municipal Solid Waste Stream is paper.  Last year because of the Clean Your Files Day event, approximately 2 tons were recycled.  Beginning in 2008, all Buchanan County Schools will have an office paper shredding and recycling bin.   Businesses are also encouraged to drop off paper and newspapers at the Recycling Center located at the Grundy Shopping Plaza in Grundy, VA.

Other Recycling Programs
Year around Electronics Recycling is available by contacting the Litter and Recycling Office.  They include Computers, cell phones, televisions, stereos, copiers, scanners, etc.

To reduce household hazardous waste being placed in the garbage collection system, Buchanan County offers a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day.  Materials accepted include paints, insecticides, pesticides, pool chemicals, electronic batteries, asbestos, and other household cleaners.
